She is a faculty member at Arizona State University in Clinical Psychology, supervising Doctoral students, and is former director of training for the Institute of Creative Change, an organization that promoted social construction and narrative approaches to change.

Dr. Howell's approach to working with clients is based on the assumption that all people have the strengths and inner resources, which can be accessed. The assumption is that by asking creative questions, we can generate new possibilities, which will enhance life choices. Dr. Howell works collaboratively with clients to develop stories that generate new ways of being in the world. Her counseling style may include cognitive behavior therapy, social construction, narrative therapy, systems therapy, and mindfulness.

She has three years in trauma training based on a holistic approach that the mind and body are one. When cognitive talk therapies do not work, as they ofter do not with trauma, working with the nervous system may be a more effective approach to healing.

As a psychologist, Dr. Howell does not prescribe medications, but may make a referral, or collaborate with physicians, R.N.'s, or psychiatrists when medication is indicated for the client. Dr. Howell works collaboratively with her clients who do not wish to take medication, offering holistic approaches to improving emotional well-being.

The range of Dr. Howell's services include individual psychotherapy for adolescents and adults, couples and family therapy, marriage counseling, women's groups, trauma resolution and mindfulness meditation.
